Which photo is more appealing to look at? Which photo is more appetizing???
“Eat From the Rainbow,” you’ve heard the expression before. Aside from the fact that it is more healthy for you, Why Should We Eat from The Rainbow??? The obvious general answer is so you will get more vitamins and minerals in your diet, but what does it really mean. Let’s look at why Eating From the Rainbow matters, so on your next trip to Mother Natures Medicine Cabinet (produce section of your store) you will not only choose food items based on how they taste, but the health benefits each food will offer you and your family based on it’s beautiful color. Most of these will be intuitive…way back when people were growing their own food they knew instinctively the medicinal properties of each food based on it’s color. Since we buy our food we no longer have that connection to our energy source, but trust me once you read the list your natural instincts will kick in…no surprises here. Just a lot of fun Ah-Ha’s…
Red: the color of blood and associated with our heart. Red fruits and veggies are loaded with powerful antioxidants such as lycopene and anthocyanin that may help with fighting heart disease soaking up the free radicals in our system.
Red bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon
Orange: these happy gems are best known for their anti-inflammatory properties, generally high in the Vitamin C department.
Oranges, orange bell peppers, tangerines, sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots
Yellow: tissue repair and building. Our bodies are always working hard to stay on top of their game and that includes repairing and rebuilding tissues damaged by free radicals and acidic damaging foods we love to indulge in (fast food, pastries, pizza, soda, alcohol, caffeine, etc)
Lemons, squash, melon, pineapple
Blue and Purple: blue specifically known to nourish our stem cells and bone marrow; purples are protectors of both our central nervous system and our gut/digestion. Blue and purple foods are full of flavonoids which help to increase vitamin C levels in our cells, which will boost our immunity and help prevent rogue molecules that can alter DNA.
Blueberries, blackberries, plums, eggplant, purple grapes
Greens: thanks to plant chlorophyll in our kale, spinach, watercress, green “leafies”, toxins are literally sucked out of our blood stream making “greens” our major powerhouse cleansers, detoxifiers and neutralizers.
Broccoli, kale, collards, spinach, green beans, watercress
